Overview

 

GearUp is a dynamic mobile app designed to simplify outdoor gear shopping and keep users updated on local activities and events. The app addresses challenges faced by immigrants, individuals with busy schedules, or those with accessibility needs, such as language barriers, time management, and navigating complex interfaces. By providing an easy-to-use platform, GearUp empowers users to efficiently purchase gear, discover local events, and stay connected with their outdoor interests—all in one place.

The Problem

Outdoor enthusiasts often face challenges when planning their adventures. Whether it's finding the right gear, discovering the offers, or staying updated with local outdoor events , the process can be time-consuming and overwhelming, especially for people with different accessibility needs, like language barriers or visual impairments.

MEET JOSEPH:

He is a dedicated student who loves the outdoors but faces unique challenges.

Joseph is a 20-year-old full-time student and recent immigrant living in the United States. He is passionate about outdoor adventures and camping but struggles to find the right gear and local outdoor offers due to language barriers and limited time. Balancing studies, family duties, and his hobbies adds to his challenges.

Through in-depth interviews and careful observations, I gained valuable insights into how Joseph's daily struggles with communication and accessibility impact his ability to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

The scope of this project is to help users like Joseph overcome language barriers, manage time effectively, and navigate complex interfaces with ease. The current focus is on creating an intuitive, accessible app for browsing outdoor gear, scheduling events, and setting reminders. Future development could expand to include personalized event recommendations, AI-driven planning features, and enhanced social sharing for outdoor activities.

How might we simplify complex interfaces while personalizing user’s experience, ensuring they can easily access detailed product information and discover relevant gear and activities without feeling overwhelmed?

​The biggest opportunity was to design an app experience that supports Joseph’s need for clarity and balance while removing the stress of language barriers and information overload. The focus was on accessibility, visual simplicity, and intuitive flow to support both quick purchases and ongoing engagement with local outdoor activities.

  • A language switcher for a seamless transition between languages, enabling multilingual accessibility without friction.

  • Visual-first browsing with icon-based navigation and picture-heavy listings to support users with low English proficiency.

  • Smart scheduling tools and event reminders that fit into his academic and family life without causing overwhelm.

  • A simple, categorized layout with filters, guided comparisons, and a “save for later” feature to help him stay focused.

  • Voice command shortcuts and AI chat help to reduce cognitive load and assist with fast decision-making.

A quick preview of cart items on the profile page allows for a seamless shopping experience. The quick search bar at the top and easy access to the cart make browsing and purchasing effortless, while customizable settings offer control over language preferences and notifications.
